29th April 2010 The End of the Season

So the 2009/10 season has finsihed - delayed by a few days as our last guests had a little trouble leaving. No it wasn't that they couldn't be parted from the great food or the super end of season snow, it was of course the delays caused by the volcano.

It was a great season - excellent snow as always and great guests. A highlight of the season being Caroline and my birthdays (a bit of a biggy). After a lot of thought and a whip round the guests that week bought us a present at great expense. You can see it in the picture above this paragraph!! A Les Carroz branded Marmotte toothpick holder!! A great fun week and looking forward to next year when they will all be coming back.

Thank you to all our guests for making it such a fun season, and also, to Martha, our child care expert who had a fantastic season and it was all we could do some weeks to stop guests packing Martha and taking her home with them!

Summer is around the corner so now is a time for general cleaning and decorating as we await our summer guests. And of course taking the time to enjoy the walking and beautiful spring weather and scenery.

    27th March 2010

    David and Rachel's Big Day!!

During February we had masses of snow - Hannah and Gwen who were in childcare with Martha made 2 snow people - called David and Rachel - and they decided they should get married. Very touching!

3 weeks to go i this season - just had a fantastic fall of spring snow, so everywhere looking very wintery again and of course, great skiing!

Very happy Chef this week! A guest returning this week after coming last year, remembered that when asked if I missed anything about the UK, I could only think of a decent curry and a pint of Wadworths 6X bitter. When he arrived he thrust a 4-pack of 6X into my hands. :), but said sorry he couldn't get a take away fo...r me! Freezing cold here , -8 degrees, sunny - perfect skiing. Can it get much better?

    27th January 2010

Still some late availability in March with our special package stay for 7 nights for the price of 6 and get a 6 day ski pass for the price of a 5 day one!

    17th December 2009

With recent snow falls and 30cm due this weekend the start of the season and January looks set to be great.

We still have places available for January - and special prices too (see below) so it's not too late to make your skiing holiday this year in Les Carroz

    8th December 2009

This year in response to a number of requests and to help off-set the cost of lunchtime meals up the mountain we will be offering packed lunches for those that want them - order them the night before and they will be ready for breakfast.

We aim to offer a range of baguettes: cheese; ham; ham and cheese; salad, etc. Also fruit and bottled water. This may chan

    18th October 2009

The first snow arrived yesterday - OK, so it was just enough for a dusting but a good sign!

The weather has turned very cold with hard frosts at night - my little vegetable garden has been hard hit - the Blette (Swiss Chard) has been well frozen and is looking a little limp. The leeks and cabbages are doing fine (though the leeks I picked for lunch were frozen in the middle!). The courgettes have had it; frozen and died.

We have had a great summer and autumn in the garden - between Caroline and I we have made: courgette chutney, damson jam, plum and greengage jam, blueberry jam and raspberry jam. Look out for them this winter on the breakfast table. Well, maybe not the chutney, that will have to wait until the cheese course in the evening!!

    30th August 2009

The summer season has ended - and a great one it was, with many highlights to remember: great weather, fantastic entertainments in the village square and brilliant events such as the Cavalcime and the Tour de France passing through.

For our family, the highlight has to be the guided walk Caroline, our girls and some friends took acroos the glacier from the Aiguille du Midi at the top of Chamonix to Courmayeur in Italy. The photos below show the stunning scenery and breathtaking views.

As we head into September the great weather is continuing - and its time for me to start hunting mushrooms again - one of my favourite times of the year!

    16th June 2009

This week the "Tour de France" passed through our commune - the spectacle and razzmatazz was exceptional.

We all went down to Araches about midday on the free shuttle bus provided by the Office de Tourisme, staked our claim on a spot by the finish line and prepared ourselves for the event. A picnic of fresh French bread, cured ham, cheese, sausage and of course a bottle or 2 of wine passed the time until the pre-race caravan arrived; a multitude of sponsors' floats which trundled by throwing out goodies to the crowds. Our girls claimed a bagful of bounty - caps, tee-shirts, cycling shirts, sweets, Vittel water, key rings, etc. In all honesty they would have been happy just to see that!

As it was the cyclists raced by an hour later - including the amazing Lance Armstrong.

This weekend it is the VTTcime - a weekend long celebration of mountain biking and road biking. It is a super event and well organised by the Office de Tourisme - with concerts, demos, equipment trials and stands, plus of course the race trials and competitions. Photos to appear in due course.

The photos below show Domi and her friends waiting at the finish together with the peloton as it passes through and Lance Armstrong (if you look carefully!)

    Can you sopt Lance???

    4th May 2009

And so the season has ended...

It was a great season, great snow, lots of guests and already many have rebooked for next year - thank you to everybody.

360 Sun and Ski Recipe Book

This year, after 8 winters and cooking over 150 different recipes, I finally finished my recipe book. I was able to offer it to our guests as a "word" document by e-mail. All we asked for was a donation to our chosen charity "A chacun son Everest". A charity based in Chamonix which aims to help children who are battling against cancer achieve other goals in their lives; be it trying rock climbing, canyoning or any other activity which allows them to gain new experiences and personal goals. Through this recipe book, we have been able to donate 330.11 € to the charity. Thank you all very much those who helped and I wish you luck trying the recipes!

    My crocked Knee!

As many of you will know I managed to break the anterior cruciate ligament in my knee early in January!. Whilst still able to work I was hobbling around the kitchen for 6 weeks in a leg brace. The brace is now off though I am still having physio sessions. The good news is that I will be operated on on the 9th June and all being well will be back skiing next year.

    Summer 2009

Summer is just around the corner - though the Timalet piste still has snow on it!

This year the summer in Les Carroz is full of events and "animations" - perfect for families with children young and old. We have the Randocime (a walking/orienteering weekend), the VTTcime (a weekend of Mountain biking and road racing - with courses for families, beginners and experienced bikers), the Cavalcime (a weekend dedicated to all things related to horses - riding, demonstrations by traditional blacksmiths, dressage demonstrations, trick riding plus much more). We also have the French Choral society coming, performing a number of free concerts and ea

In February we had Mardi Gras (of course we had pancakes for the children staying that night for their pudding as it was pancake day in the UK).

There was a big parade, a torchlight descent by the ski schools, music and fireworks. And of course the highlight was the burning of the "Mr Carnival" - a man made from straw with fireworks artfully placed in and on his body.

    14th February 2009

A week of almost continuous snow - great skiing though visibility was a bit poor at times.

The children staying this week have had great fun playing in the snow outside the chalet. The photo below is of Genevieve (our youngest daughter) and Anna, a guest, having made snow hats - looking rather like a couple of Smurfs!
